What Is Sexual Assault Awareness Month?

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a nationwide effort to increase awareness about sexual assault, instruct communities and people on the best way to avoid sexual assault, and supply resources for survivors. It is usually observed in May. This is the month of their first National Sexual Assault Symposium along with the very first national sexual assault survey because the Sexual Assault Awareness Act was passed into law in 1990. In this age, organizations around the country have to provide one sexual assault awareness program to every community and school complex that they serve.

Every year, organizations may opt to concentrate on sexual assault awareness month. This is great since it enables survivors who may not otherwise get out and speak about their experiences to be discovered and supported by many others. There are also support groups that enable survivors to share their stories freely with like-minded men and women.

The goals of Sexual Assault Awareness Month would be to enable the community, educate community members, and also increase the sense of violence against women and girls nationwide. Each year, thousands of new survivors are attacked. But due to the lack of resources for these offenses, it is often not possible for survivors to file charges or hold perpetrators accountable. In reaction to this, the Department of Justice is currently devoting resources to focus on raising current statistics on reported sexual assaults and preventing future offenses from happening. This will mark the start of a new prevention month.
